Roy Adams (Ryan Reynolds), David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the crew of the International Space Station travel to Mars to see if the samples collected on the red planet show signs of intelligent life. When one of the scientists on board examines the only cell found, the whole team witnesses an unusual event: the unquestionable proof that there is extraterrestrial life.
To their astonishment, they decide to examine and establish the first contact with the alien organism. Unfortunately, the astronaut group will discover too late that this way of life is smarter than they had hoped, to such an extent that their lives could be in grave danger.
