Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garrpe are two Portuguese Jesuit priests who are forced to embark on a journey to Japan to find their mentor, Cristóvão Ferreira. Rumor has it that Ferreira has publicly renounced his faith after being persecuted and tortured. In search of this missionary the two priests live the torture and violence with which the Japanese receive the Christians. And is that in the Japanese country the practice of Catholicism is not allowed, so those who practice this belief should do so in the underground. Jesuit missionaries witness the violent persecution of Japanese Christians, who are subjected to a dictatorial regime that seeks to eliminate any western influence in the country.
