Karate Kid: Legends opens the franchise with a warm heart and modern sensibility. The city is New York, and Li Fong’s quest presents a new kind of martial arts solidarity. Also, the combination of Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio creates genuine nostalgia and energy. Li’s juggling of family, culture, and duty speaks deeply. His training with both masters combines Chinese kung fu and Miyagi-style karate in new and interesting ways. At the same time, the film keeps its human focus, with high emotional tension. Also, the action scenes are packed with energy and intent. They serve to advance the characters rather than as spectacle. Once again, Ben Wang is excellent in the lead role as Li, demonstrating physical and emotional range. The supporting cast, which includes Ming-Na Wen and Sadie Stanley, adds emotional depth and urgency. Li’s relationship with his mother adds needed context. Last, “Karate Kid: Legends” passes the torch smartly. It respects the legacy of past heroes while forging its own unique identity. The film is warm and inviting, nostalgic and yet oddly contemporary.
